Muay Thai headgear can protects you from bruise injury on your face, save your ears from tear, shield you againts many tissue damages. However, It can't and will not protect you from the force of a punch. Even with headgear on, you can still be knocked out, receive a brain concussion from repeated punches. So it is recommened to avoid field testing of your head guard protection by receiving a full force punch or an axe kick in Muay Thai.

When will I use headgear in Muay Thai?
Unlike normal boxing, Muay Thai boxer are endager from an elbow strike, knee strike or any kind of kick. Too bad Muay Thai boxer aren't allow to wear their head guard during their fight. Fortunately this rules only apply to professional fighting. Head guard are allow during amateur match, sparring or training. It could be wise to put them on every time you hit something that can fight back.
Is there any different from normal head guard?
Muay Thai headgear are a little bit different from normal boxing head guard. It has tougher protection against elbows, axe kick and punches to the top of head, forehead and ears while leaving your nose, your cheek and your chin blank. Although Muay Thai head guards are different, general head guard will do just fine to protect you.

There are many types of head guards for you to choose. Ranging from ones that has minimal coverage to ones which cover entirely of your head (of course not your eyes). If you fear having your nose broken, you can buy headgear that covers your nose. If you want to have your clean face come out from a badly beaten fight unscathed, you might need a head guard which covers as much of your head as possible (perhaps a knight armour). Remind that full head guard offer more protecion while cost you your sight and breathing.
How to buy Muay Thai Boxing headgear?
The most important thing to buy your head guard is size. Your head guard should fit tightly and do not forget to laces up so it stays tight. The headgear must be snug enough that the impact of a blow doesn't make it come down to obstruct your vision.
